ARCHITECTURE CULTURE & HISTORY
PROJECT 1 | PRECEDENT STUDY & ANALYSIS
On-line group forum is used in this exercise as an effective virtual learning discussion platform for students to work as a team to help each other in exploring the precedent studies of a chosen building with cultural, historical and architectural ignificances.
Through the active on-line discussion forum, students even outside class session will be able to exchange views, share and debate the knowledge derived from the precedent studies to best grasp as well as to encourage a comprehensive analysis of the underlying conceptual ideas of the building. This on-line forum discussion will also prepare them for their verbal presentation during Studio critic session.
PART A | ONLINE FORUM DISCUSSION
Students are required to answer the questions listed below for the Online Group Forum:
1. Who is the architect or founder of the building?
2. Where and when was the building built?
3. What is the form, or shape of the building?
4. What is the function or purpose of the building?
5. What materials / methods are used for construction?
6. What makes your building historically significant / meaningful?
In a group of 4, we are required to answer all the questions together and record every discussion in the forum. The building that we chose is The Colosseum.
I have chosen question number 4 which is spatial Organization analysis, I totally have no idea how to start my board until I have tutorial with my lecture. I learnt a lot while doing my research, the symmtry balance, additive or subtrsctive, the public and private spaces and many else. Everything on the board must be hand drawn and hand written, because of that I had improved my drawing skills.

PART B | ANALYSIS PRESENTATION BOARD
For part B, each members are given another set of questions that are divided into 2 parts. Part A is filled with basic questions where everyone is required to answer, where else students are instructed to analyse one of the element from question 1 to 5. All students are also required to choose question 6 as to summarize everything regarding their research.
Analysis should include:
PART A
1. How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?
2. What is the initial ideas and design concept of the building?
PART B
1. Concept and Architecture analysis (i. Architect and/or Building concepts, ii.Architecture/Style)
2. Building massing analysis (ii. Material and Structure, ii. Geometry iii. Unit to Whole)
3. Circulation Analysis (i. Circulation to Use-Space, ii. Natural ventilation)
4. Spatial Organization analysis (i. Spatial planning & Siting, ii. Building sequence and process, iii. Public vs. private, iv. Axes, v. Symmetry & balance,
vii. Repetitive to unique, viii. Additive and subtractive, ix. Hierarchy)
5. Building plan-section/elevation analysis (i. Plan to Section or Elevation, ii. Natural light penetration)
6. Partà - Culminates and Summarizes (i. gesture, ii. essence, iii, dominant idea, iv salient
characteristic of the building)
PART C |3D ABSTRACTION MODEL
For this part, students are requited to produce a 3D model to expressing the details of some aspect or part of a building. Besides that, only
the most significance and relevance is extracted and simplified. The dimenion of the model is 30cm x 30cm with 10cm depth.

The main structure of The Colosseum will be the column, every level of the building have different type of column and this is the main problem of our group. We try out best to make the model more detail, we even made a close up of each level beside the main model. Teamwork is really important at this part, we have to seperate our tasks wisely. The engineers of our group which is Rave Lai and Kenneth really done their good job in calculating the propotion of the building. At the end, my model making skills had improved, and I finally know that it really need much time to make a detailed model.
